What a flooring RAMS should cover

General guidance based on HSE guidance. It is not a substitute for assessing your own site, work and people.

A RAMS pairs a risk assessment (what could harm people on the job and how you'll control it) with a method statement (how the work will be done, step by step, with those controls built in).

The risk assessment is the legal duty. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers must make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks, and record the significant findings if they employ five or more people. HSE says method statements aren't required by law outside demolition, dismantling and structural alteration, but calls them an effective and practical way to plan, manage and monitor construction work. Main contractors will usually want both.

CDM 2015 counts fitting out, renovation, repair and redecoration as construction work. Contractors must plan, manage and monitor their own work, make sure workers have a suitable site-specific induction and, on projects with several contractors, follow the principal contractor's directions.

Noise

Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005: action at 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A) daily or weekly exposure; limit 87 dB(A).

Vibration

Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005: hand-arm action value 2.5 m/s² A(8); limit 5.0 m/s² A(8).

Dust masks

HSE's general level for construction dust is an assigned protection factor of 20, such as an FFP3 mask, face-fit tested.

Asbestos

Can be present in any building built or refurbished before 2000. Old asbestos floor tiles can be hidden under carpets.
